I either lost a pound or stayed the same, I couldn't really tell this week. I miss the digital scale. I might be forced to go out and spend money on one of my own!
Mr. T and I have been forced into a Tues-Fri workout schedule thanks to our busy weekends lately. It's not optimal--my body feels more tired and I don't think the workouts are as good. And then, Tuesday mornings are particularly hard after 3 days off. I guess I should be grateful we have time to work out at all! I was looking at my calendar to contemplate what I have to do the week before the wedding and realizing, "I am going to have family and friends in town starting Saturday 10/24...how the heck am I going to get to the gym?" I need to steal time somehow, even if it means getting up at an ungodly hour. I think the workouts will help stave off the stress...plus, we need to do some preemptive work to get rid of the candy and cupcakes! ;-)

OMW Week 16, WW Week 6, and Weekend Progress
Another 2 pounds lost! That makes 7.5 total so far. I was thankful not to be chastised by the WW tracker again this time.
I would've gotten to the gym earlier today, but we discovered that ants had found the cat food overnight. So we built a moat out of a cookie tin (thanks to Heather and Erik for the idea). The cats were super freaked out by it, especially Dobby, but hopefully they get used to it. I hate ants. Anyway, I didn't do my full workout today, but I only had to cut a few things.
Regardless, it was a good workout this morning. Warm weather makes for loose muscles! Friday's workout was really good too. mmmmwarmth. The older I get, the more cat-like I become. The cats and I basked in the weather this weekend. Ahhh.
This weekend was relaxed but we also got some wedding stuff done. First, we walked all around the UC Berkeley campus looking for likely wedding photo sites. This was inspired by Offbeat Bride's recent ad for Lilia Photography. I looked at Lilia's site, and found these lovelies:

Not only is UCB my alma mater and a nostalgic location for me, OMG dinosaur bones!! Or a casting of them, at least. How cool would that be for a Hallowedding photo shoot? Mr. T likes the idea too, so Saturday we went in search of fossils! It took some tramping around...apparently I never had a reason to be in the life sciences building when I went to school there? We eventually found it. Unfortunately the campus was having some sort of open house that day and it was packed. We can only hope Halloween is a little calmer. The campus is lovely and would provide a number of good locations, not the least of which would be the top of Sather Tower (seen in the first picture).
Feeling virtuous not only about getting wedding stuff done but also all that walking, I persuaded Mr. T to take me out to dinner at one of our candidates for the rehearsal dinner, a seafood restaurant in Berkeley (and no, not Spenger's). Sadly, although the restaurant was beautiful and my margarita kicked ass (had to use some extra WW points on that one!), my halibut was dry and overcooked. And for a seafood restaurant, that was just sad. Mr. T liked his crab cakes, but the halibut was a deal-breaker for me. As my day-of-coordinator might say...they had one job. And they blew it. Disappointing.
Sunday I worked on doing data entry into our spreadsheet; I entered in all the addresses I have and tried to track down some of the ones I don't. We still haven't sent out save the date emails but I feel closer to doing that now that I have a list of email addresses (with some gaps).
I had been waivering on whether to invite my mother's whole side of the family, because we're not super close, but I felt that politeness dictated it since I took a trip out to visit all of them (mostly my grandma, but we ended up seeing everyone) last Fall. I decided to just go ahead and add them to the list and stop stressing out about it, which means adding more money for food and cupcakes, etc., etc., but it's not all that much more, and plus now we have time to save up for it (since we were almost done saving money for the wedding anyway). So, if they come, we're covered, and if they don't, we have some extra, and I'm relieved to have just decided.
We are almost at the 6-month mark, and need to really tackle some of the bigger things like registering, invitation design, Mr. T's suit, etc.!! I'm feeling anxious about it.
This weekend we're attending Mr. T's cousin's wedding. His cousin's fiancee has trusted me to create the wedding bouquets, corsages, and boutonnieres! That's a lot of trust, and I hope I don't let her down. Granted, it's an intimate family wedding, but still, it's hugely important. I'm thankful to have a chance to practice my workshop skills! It already feels like that was so long ago.

Engagement Party Afterglow
So Saturday was our engagement party, hosted by the MOH, BM, and another dear friend of ours (and her husband, who did a lot of the manual labor!). I wore a tea-length red dress that I bought for a friend's wedding, with my leopard-print stiletto heels (which surprisingly were fine to wear all night; I expected them to be less comfy) and Mr. T wore a dark blue button-down shirt, jeans, and his birthday Adidas. It was a little foreshadowing of our wedding outfits, since I'll be wearing a red dress and he'll have a dark blue suit on.
We didn't have to lift a finger other than bringing an iPod loaded with music and my old Polaroid camera (which I discovered doesn't work, but I'll get to that in a second). Mr. T was a little uncomfortable with having folks do everything for us, but I felt strangely liberated (and I am usually the control freak!). I knew my girls would take care of everything, though. The MOH also asked us to bring some framed pictures of us as decor for the food tables and I realized that I haven't printed a single photo out since we got a digital camera, so that's on my list of things to do before the wedding! All the photos I found of us were from years ago and we both look baby-faced...and thinner. I did find a couple of hilarious Halloween images: one of us as geishas, and one of us as Mulder and Scully. We went to Target that afternoon to get some frames for the photos and scored some for $2 each! We'll have to pick up more before the wedding, since I'd like to display a bunch of photos there as well.
We hit horrible traffic on the way over to the MOH's apartment and ended up being 40 minutes late to our own party. Mr. T called it being "fashionably late" and tried to keep me from getting too cranky about it. Once we got there, I was amazed at what a great job the ladies had done. The MOH was calling the theme "Halloween lite", so there was a skull on the door and a sign that had our names, hyphenated, followed by "Engagement Party;" the sign was in the shape of a spooky old castle.
Once we got inside we were greeted by the hilarious site of white and orange streamers in the hall, and a white tissue paper wedding bell with bats hanging from it. I laughed and laughed. Once we had drinks in hand (there were two signature drinks, named after us, and an elaborate and crazy bar set-up), I relaxed and got to chatting with folks. The Halloween and wedding decor was great, and there was a huge spread of food, although I realized I was so excited to talk to folks that I barely ate anything...no wonder you hear about all the couples who don't eat anything on their wedding day! The E-party team had everything running like a well-oiled machine, and we felt so taken care of and loved.
They had set up a guest book area with Polaroids; luckily my bridesmaid had brought her own Polaroid camera because mine just wouldn't do anything. I have no idea how to fix it; it's been at least 10 years since I last looked at it. I'd wager the battery's dead, but how to replace it? We couldn't figure it out. Anyway, although Polaroid is no longer making new film, they'd managed to find some, although it expired in 2004. It gave all the photos a sepia tone that was kind of neat. Still, I think my vague idea of having a Polaroid guest book at the wedding will have to remain unfulfilled, since the film situation will only get worse from here out. Don't worry, though, I have other ideas!
Anyway, folks got their picture taken and then signed next to their photo. It is a really fun memento from the evening! Mr. T's dad was there, although I think he felt a bit out of place since none of the other parents/older relatives came, which was unfortunate. My friend from high school came, and Mr. T's cousins, and the belly dance crew, and Mr. T's office, and my book club (the bookbabes). I showed off my ring; Mr. T and I had been joking that we needed to have a fancy jeweler's lamp set up so that I could do showings every 15 minutes. Folks seemed to like it, or at least they said they did! ;-)
One of my belly dance troupemates picked up vegan cakes from Millennium; since I'm a lactard she wanted us to have cake I could eat. There was a lemon one with white chocolate frosting and a chocolate one with yummy raspberry filling and chocolate frosting. Apparently she asked the baker to decorate them for Halloween, which first surprised the baker (um, mid-August!), and then amused her. She had to bring some ghost-shaped sprinkles from home and asked my troupemate not to tell anyone she did that, since Millennium doesn't use any artificial ingredients in their food! Mr. T and I did a ceremonial cake-cutting pose, which will probably be the first and last time for that, since we're doing cupcakes for our wedding.
A couple of folks disobeyed our "no gifts" request (defiantly!) and we got a great bottle of champagne, which we'll probably pop open on our 11th anniversary this year, and we also got a nice bottle of tequila and a box of candy. Ah...booze and sugar, the way to my heart.
The MOH sent us home with tons of yummy middle eastern food, the leftover cake, and these hilarious bride and groom rubber duckies that now reside in our bathroom.
The next day we hung out with Mr. T's dad, watched the Olympics, and got some dinner. It was a fantastic weekend, but I'm exhausted today. It felt like a test run for the wedding, only on a smaller scale...very educational! My one regret is that Mr. T and I didn't spend more time together at the party...we have sort of an unofficial "divide and conquer" strategy at parties to get to talk to more people. At our wedding, though, I told him I want to hang out with my husband, and he agreed.
Seeing how smoothly everything went made me reconsider hiring a day-of coordinator (DOC). I have a little idea about that...gotta clear it with Mr. T and we'll see what happens...

Addition to the Family
I talked to my brother last night--we don't talk on the phone very much, neither of us being phone people. Unfortunately, since he and my sister-in-law had my niece, they don't have much time for email either, so our contact is sporadic. I'll have to be more proactive about that.
Anyway, what we were discussing was that our grandmother is turning 90 this year, and my cousin and I have been discussing a mini-family reunion in honor of the occasion. I was trying to sweet-talk my bro into bringing his family.
I also let him know about our engagement party in August. But, if he had to pick one, I thought he should go with the outing to see our grandmother.
And guess what? I'm not sure any travel is going to be advisable later on this year, because my sister-in-law is pregnant again! I'm excited to be an auntie for the second time, and happy for my brother and his wife, but I'm also disappointed not to be seeing them in the near future. Perhaps I'll try and book a trip next Spring, if I'm not totally insane and broke by then.
The other crazy thing is that since they don't live in California, they don't get maternity leave like we do. Here I was thinking that this was a universal thing--you have a baby, you get time off--but apparently my SIL has to use her vacation time to take the time off, so she's saving it all up this year.
Another reason the Sunshine State is awesome...

Cautiously Optimistic
After more haggling over dates, we've settled on 8/16 as a potential Engagement Party date. Mr. T has been assigned the task of checking with his family before we put it on the calendar in pen!
Mr. T's cousin just got engaged this weekend. That makes two engaged cousins for Mr. T, and one for me. Maybe we're just in that age group right now, or maybe it's because we're in that mindframe, but it feels like a whole heck of a lot of engagements going on.
Congratulations everyone!

Reality Sets In: The Budget
Mr. T and I are financing the wedding ourselves. We are not from rich families (nor poor, either, to be fair, but we have no desire to steal from our parents' retirement funds), but we are pretty fiscally responsible folks with no debt, and we have over a year and a half to save, thanks to the Halloween 2009 deadline.
Most weddings cost $20,000 these days. Did you know that? And that's not an extravagant wedding. That's not a wedding where you rent a mechanical bull, for example (there goes that dream...). That's your basic venue, food, cake, dress, rings, groom's suit, flowers, invitations, photographer, etc. kind of wedding. Mr. T was particularly appalled when we discovered that the photographer might end up costing as much as our food will. I guess the photos will last us forever, but still.
Mr. T and I are hoping that we get good bonuses the next 2 years. He is a crazy good saver (yes, I know that's not my best grammar), so I shouldn't be so worried, I guess. Since we got together, he's inspired me to pay off $30K in car, student loan, and credit card debt. Most Americans live way above their means, and we are encouraged to, as I think the current real estate disasters would prove.
Because I'm a girl with a goal, I immediately began plotting how to save money. My Maid of Honor said that her coworker got married recently, and was trying to lose weight for her wedding, using the mantra "A bride wouldn't eat that." We decided mine should be, "A bride wouldn't buy that."
I used this mantra right away when presented with the scorpion earrings at BrainDrops. The tail of the scorpion went through the ear. They were gorgeous! I put them right back on the shelf where they belonged, though.
I've also given up my latte-a-day plus lowfat scone habit (sigh...I'm still doing one a week). I'm doing whole wheat bagels, jam, and tea at work now. I have to label the crap out of it and hide it in the fridge so the vultures at work don't eat it. Seriously, who eats other peoples' food in the work fridge? It's like an episode of Friends or something.
I also (and my librarian friends would be proud of me!) got a library card for the first time since high school and used it to check out our book club book for this month. I was seriously impressed with the library's website. I've spent some time requesting all the latest titles I'm interested in. Books are a total addiction for me, so really the library card was long overdue...no pun intended.
Next month my company starts this benefit where we are allowed to take out money for our transit expenses pre-tax. I'm so excited about this. They will ship my train tickets directly to my house, and I have a pre-paid credit card to use for the days I drive into work. Not only am I saving money by taking the costs out pre-tax, but I get the train tickets at a discount, too.
As for other money saving ideas, I'm still brainstorming. We could definitely cook at home more. I've always taken lunch to work, because there's not much around my office. We also don't go see movies in the theater very often, not only because of the expense, but mostly because my super power is attracting the most annoying people in any public venue (Mr. T's is picking the slowest line at the grocery store). The last movie we saw had multiple families with noisy children, including one family that dropped what sounded like an entire change jar on the floor, kept rustling what sounded like a huge garbage bag, had a crying baby they wouldn't take out, and as a capper, the dad took a cell phone call mid-movie. Mr. T announced, "I'm going to see one more movie in the theater this year, "Iron Man". That's it."
I'll let you know what else I come up with on the money-saving front. (I know, it's fascinating, huh?)

The Proposal
Mr. T and I have been dating since Halloween 1997. Friends and family have been pointedly asking about our marital status for about the past 5 years or so now, but Mr. T (my dad's nickname for my fiancee) is a slow mover, and he waited until he was ready, and until I was ready to pull my hair out. I thought for sure he'd propose on our 10-year anniversary, after my obvious hints ("You know, we have a big anniversary coming up...I'm just saying..."), but nope. So I was stunned when he asked me on Valentine's Day. It was quite sneaky, really, as we both turn up our noses at the holiday and I wasn't expecting anything special at all, but we met at a Valentine's Day party in 1993, so it was the 15-year anniversary of the day we met.
Well, 2/13 was the actual 15-year anniversary--but a group of us spent the night at the party and all hung out on 2/14 as well, so I'll give that one to him.
I thought Mr. T might have forgotten the anniversary, so as a fun surprise I brought champagne (Veuve Clicquot) and cupcakes (Andronico's--they kicked ass) home on 2/13, and Mr. T got a look on his face and said, "Oh, I always thought of that anniversary as tomorrow," which I didn't think anything of until after the fact, of course. He said he almost moved up his timetable but that I wouldn't leave the room long enough. I guess I have a bladder of steel.
On Valentine's Day we just got dinner in the neighborhood, hung out and watched TV, and he kept nagging at me to get ready for bed, which is not that unusual for him--I'm likely to put everything off so that I'm getting into bed for the night with hair dripping wet from the shower. So I finally showered, brushed my teeth, etc., and then I came out and sat down on our bed, and he jumped up from the bed and said, "I have to get something," and then ran out of the room. I heard him open his bag, and then he came back in with a ring box and a goofy grin and got down on one knee and proposed. I almost said yes before he got the sentence out! I graciously allowed him to finish, however.
The ring is a "placeholder," as he put it, because he knows I want to pick out my own. I have my heart set on an antique, and not a diamond, but a colored stone; I think it will be one of those "I'll know it when I see it" things. Mr. T knows I like garnets, so with our friends' help, he got a sterling silver and garnet ring until we get the "real" one. It's very sweet and he did a great job on his own.
It's so exciting. I keep looking at my hand, even though it's been over 3 weeks since he asked me.
You wouldn't think things would feel any different after 10 years (and we probably qualified for "common law" marriage at this point, if they do that in our state), but I do feel different. I guess I'm more of an old-fashioned girl than I thought.
